ENGLAND
Heathrow Airport is London’s biggest airport and is situated to the west of the city. More than 70 million people pass through the airport each year, making it the busiest passenger airport in Europe and the third busiest in the world, although it welcomes more international passengers than any other airport.
The airport began life as an airfield in 1929. Expansion work in 1944 to cater for long-haul military planes was halted at the end of World War II. The government then later developed the airport for non-military use.
Heathrow has five passenger terminals, one dedicated cargo terminal and two runways. Terminal 5 was voted Skytrax World’s Best Airport Terminal 2014 in the Annual World Airport Awards. The airport services 180 destinations in 85 countries, the most popular being New York (USA), Dublin (Ireland), Paris (France), Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Frankfurt (Germany).
