When it comes to wining and dining in New York, the choice can be somewhat overwhelming, with practically every type of cuisine available and every standard of dining available, you could dine somewhere different every meal of your holiday and still not make a dent in the list of eateries available. We asked our New York office what favourites they had in the city and they were keen to share their insider tips…

One that came up time and time again was Wo Hop in Chinatown. Located in a basement, it’s a cash-only, old-school restaurant and we were told the dumplings, Tad Par steak and beef with noodles in oyster sauce in particular, are very good.

If it’s Japanese food that gets your mouth watering, then you’re in good company. Our friends in New York recommended Totto Ramen, for quick, easy but immensely tasty ramen and Gyu-Kaku, for outstanding Japanese barbecue. Gyu-Kaku is all about social dining, with plenty of shared plates and a personal grill installed in the centre of each table. The staff have all sorts of tips and can offer helpful suggestions throughout your evening should you wish.

For something a little more European, Italian eateries are in abundance and Little Italy is busy with locals and tourists alike. Two Italian joints we were recommended were Eataly and Spumoni Gardens. Both offer hearty Italian fare, with the latter specialising in Spumoni, an Italian dessert similar to ice cream which usually layers three flavours with small pieces of fruit and nuts.

There were also a number of American offerings, with Sons of Essex and Bar Centrale coming up trumps. The first offers a great selection of food, with the truffle mac and cheese being a firm favourite amongst our colleagues. You can also kick it old school with some board games and enjoy some chic cocktails during happy hour. Another hip joint is the Bar Centrale, hidden away in a town house; it offers great people watching as well as a slick menu of American classics and great cocktails.

We were also reminded that New York has somewhat a love affair with bakeries and indeed, a cronut at the Dominique Ansell Bakary, a cupcake from Magnolia Bakery and a tea and croissant from Balthasar’s were all popular with the New York office.

However, it turns out that even when eating, our love of aviation cannot be quashed, with The Bay House and Grill in Rosedale being our favourite. Why? Because it is directly under the landing path for JFK’s 31R runway and therefore the perfect spot for plane spotting.
